Cytomel is used to treat the implications of a mild to severely reduced thyroid function, to reduce an enlarged thyroid gland (“goitre”) and for a T3-suppression test to differentiate hypothyroidism from euthyroidism.

Ongoing stability tests have shown that Cytomel should be stored cool (2 – 8 °C). Patients can store Cytomel outside the fridge for a maximum of 1 month (if under 25 °C).

Cytomel is available in tablets of 5, 12.5 and 25 microgram liothyronine.

Legal status

Cytomel 12.5 microgram is an unlicensed medicine in the Netherlands. The Dutch Health Care Inspectorate (IGZ) has given permission for the supply.

Cytomel 12.5 microgram is supplied “from-pharmacy-to-pharmacy” on named patient basis. An order signed by the pharmacist and a physician’s statement from the prescribing physician are required with every order.
