Serine is used in combination with glycine as supplement in patients with serine deficiency syndrome, a rare hereditary metabolic disorder.
It has also been used pre-natal in larger quantities/doses per day to prevent congenital lack of glycine/gerine. After birth both glycine and serine must be administered evenly distributed over the day. It is life long treatment.
Serine is available in 2.5 gram coated granules and 500 mg capsules.
Serine is an unlicensed medicine in the Netherlands. The Dutch Health Care Inspectorate (IGZ) has given permission for the supply.
Serine is supplied “from-pharmacy-to-pharmacy” on named patient basis. An order signed by the pharmacist and a physician’s statement from the prescribing physician are required with every order.
In the Netherlands, Serine is supplied by ACE Apotheek. More information for (hospital) pharmacies in the Netherlands can be found on the website of ACE Apotheek.
